Evinrude
In response to question after question after question:
I don't know
I don't know
I don't know
Please note: I am in no way an expert on the repair of
outboard motors.
I don't have any magic sources for parts.
OMC (Evinrude) has a website
where you can find a dealer.
Ken Cook
has manuals for older Evinrudes.
If I have a problem, I go to my dealer, or ask in the
rec.boats newsgroup. If you want to ask in the rec.boats
newsgroup, you will absolutely need to have your motor's
model number and give it with your question. It will
be impossible for the expert outboard mechanics who
give help in that group to help you if they can't identify
your motor. They won't even try, since giving advice
for the wrong motor can make your problem worse.
There is absolutely no point in asking me. I will
just quote you the exact text above.
Now: this is what I wanted to say about Evinrudes.
My family has been buying Evinrude outboards since
sometime in the 1930s. I have an old registration that
was for a boat belonging to my grandfather that
had a 1936 Evinrude 4.2 HP LightTwin on it. I still
have that motor, and it still runs.
There is something to be said for the practice
of "riding for the brand". It may be the commercial
equivalent of jingoism, but until a company betrays
my trust, I won't switch to another brand to save
a dollar here or get some flash-in-the-pan feature
there. The same is true for the dealers that sell the
products; treat me right, and I'll be back, whether
or not he has the very lowest price in town. Frankly,
I think it pays off in the long run.
Evinrude and their dealer (Bob DeLange of Allen Boats,
Algonac, MI) have really treated me right during a long,
often-frustrating diagnostic problem with my Evinrude
outboard. I can only say: I'm satisfied and I'll
stick with Evinrude while they deal with me like that.
I'm planning to get a larger boat, and you can be sure
that I will be putting Evinrude FICHT motors on it.
I won't buy an old-style 2-stroke if I can get something
that cuts water pollution like this new technology.
