Names in the Flats
The Flats are full of names. Oddly, the islands seem
to get short shrift: only the larger islands or
groups of islands have names that I'm aware of.
The channels fare better: many seem to have names
if you consult enough sources. I've used old charts
and new, topographical maps, placemats in restaurants,
old prints of antique maps of the Flats to try to
find names for places in the Flats.
Mixed in with these are dozens of other channels, unnamed,
names unknown to me, or with names that are only used within families.
It is not uncommon for families, or groups of families living
in a small area, to have personal names for waterways, that
are unrecorded elsewhere and may even conflict with names that can
be found by searching a little. It's common to substitute "cut"
for "highway", although this can sometimes lead to confusion.
In general, people know where they're going, or they don't
go there.
The Smaller Channels and Cuts
Some of these will become links to other areas. If you have
a home or cottage on one of these cuts (or on one I've missed)
and would like a link to your e-mail or web page, let me know --
I'll be happy to add you.
Send me your link
I will link personal web pages or e-mail addresses. I would like to encourage
more people to document their experiences in the Flats.
I will include commercial links if they are for companies of interest
to boaters, whose main place of business is in the Flats. I will place them
indented from the names, at about the right location. I also have a page
where I will place links to businesses that
serve boaters in the Flats , even though
they may not be located directly in the Flats.
